Future Entrepreneurs
Aspiring entrepreneur? Develop your business skills and boost your employability by launching your very own business venture. Working as part of a small team and using your personal skills you’ll pitch for investments, try your hand as a Pension Fund Manager and review stocks and shares. Students take part in a range of challenges and national competitions putting their business acumen to the test, whilst interacting with a range of visiting speakers specifically tailored to your future career aspirations.

Who should follow the programme?

To access this elective, you will need to be studying either Business or Economics.

What activities can you expect to experience?

The list below is just some of the activities within the programme:

  • Attending Entrepreneur LIVE! A unique opportunity for you to listen to, engage with and pitch to some of the UK’s best entrepreneurs
  • Participation in the Young Enterprise project where you create your own business, raise the initial capital, design and sell a product or service and ultimately share out any profit and pay taxes.
  • Participation in the I Am Creative project which asks you to respond to a live creative brief from a global company with the top teams able to pitch direct to their Head of Marketing
  • Involvement in enterprise activities across college events
  • Links with a business mentor and attending entrepreneurship master classes
  • Participation in the Tenner Challenge, a nationwide competition to find the next generation of budding entrepreneurs
  • Visits to local businesses and visiting speakers building links through the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce
  • Supported activities to access potential funding and guidance from organisations which focus on supporting young entrepreneurs such as the Prince’s Trust.

You will develop the following employability skills:

What will this elective lead to after SJR?

All of the skills and knowledge gained from the programme will support students in their application to study a business related degree course at university. They will also support students who want to evidence their entrepreneurial skills to future employers and enable students to establish their own businesses in the future.

The Business department has an excellent record of student progression to Higher Education and last year our students entered university to study courses such as Business Management, Economics, Accounting & Finance and Business Management & Entrepreneurship.

Nurturing rising talent

Our Elective Programme is designed to help you develop your gifts and interests as part of an enhanced level 3 programme. We will help you realise your potential by nurturing your talent and preparing you for study at the most prestigious universities or for progression to competitive higher-level apprenticeships. Your options range from our Honours Programme, which might include following a fourth A level, to specialist Futures Programmes that will support your career goals.

Competitive sport

The college has a number of teams that play as part of the Association of College’s league and are very competitive each year. We play games on a Wednesday afternoon, so this will make up part of your time-table.

There will be trials for male and female football, male and female rugby league and netball on Wednesday 9th September at 1.30pm, meet at the Sports Hall. Following trials will be a pizza and soft drink meeting in the Sports Hall to give you more information on the season. Hockey and Basketball will follow during the first week. Details will be emailed.
