This course is exciting and challenging with a highly practical approach to understanding Business. You will complete 13 different units over two years, some of which will be assessed through exams and some through coursework. There will also be the opportunity to complete a work experience placement. The successful completion of these units will prepare you for employment or further study at university.

Specific course entry requirements

College entry to include GCSE Mathematics grade 5 or above (please refer to the Entry Requirements section for further details).

How will I be assessed?

This course is assessed by a combination of coursework and examinations. You will complete thirteen units over the two years.

What will I study?

This is a two year course and is equivalent to three A levels. You will study seven mandatory units which will provide you with a broad range of skills and knowledge to help you successfully progress. These include: exploring business, developing a marketing campaign, personal and business finance, managing an event, international business, principles of management and business decision making. In addition, you will also study six other units which will include topics such as recruitment and selection, team building, digital marketing, customer service and final accounts for public limited companies. You will have the opportunity to complete assignments based on realistic business situations linked to real life case studies. You will also be assessed through coursework, externally through written examinations and controlled assessments.

Please note that you will have to be very well organised and enjoy spending time working through a range of individual tasks outside college as around 60% of your course will be assessed through coursework.

Where will this course lead me?

As the BTEC Extended Diploma is worth 3 A levels, over your 2 years at college, nearly all of your timetable will be spent studying for this subject.

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business Studies is therefore suitable for those students who are seriously considering a career in this area, are passionate about the subject or wish to progress to study business at university. 

This course provides you with a wide range of career opportunities, including setting up your own business, working in management, accounting, banking, marketing and retail management. This course also prepares you for further study at degree level in related areas such as marketing, finance, business management and accounting.

Nurturing rising talent

Our Elective Programme is designed to help you develop your gifts and interests as part of an enhanced level 3 programme. We will help you realise your potential by nurturing your talent and preparing you for study at the most prestigious universities or for progression to competitive higher-level apprenticeships. Your options range from our Honours Programme, which might include following a fourth A level, to specialist Futures Programmes that will support your career goals.

Competitive sport

The college has a number of teams that play as part of the Association of College’s league and are very competitive each year. We play games on a Wednesday afternoon, so this will make up part of your time-table.

There will be trials for male and female football, male and female rugby league and netball on Wednesday 9th September at 1.30pm, meet at the Sports Hall. Following trials will be a pizza and soft drink meeting in the Sports Hall to give you more information on the season. Hockey and Basketball will follow during the first week. Details will be emailed.
